Happy Labor Day everyone! Hope your day is spent doing what you and your family likes to do before Fall changes how we tackle school, sports and leisure time.
Fishing and crabbing at the VA Beach Pier has been good in general. Spot and Bluefish have been plentiful at times. Predicting when they will be schooling around the pier is always unpredictable, but as we see more and more Cold Fronts coming through the area, expect fishing to pickup.
Some Spanish Mackeral have been hitting Gotcha plugs, mainly early in the day, with Tailor Blues taking the same baits. I have always found the Spanish hit a more rapid action with Blues chasing a slower bait.
There was a lot more bait, like Menhaden and Silverside Minnows close to the beach in the past week. In years past this was a daily occurence in the Summer, but something has changed and we don’t see the massive schools we used to.
Crabbing has been really good and the season is running later this year compared to the last couple of years. The high water temperature is probably a contributing factor. Usually, the Summer waters in the 80s begins to moderate into the 70s by September.
Look for bottom fishing catch of Spot, Croaker and Roundhead to increase as waters cool. Fish located in the Chesapeake Bay and it’s tributaries will school up adn leave the area. As they do, the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier can be a real hot spot.
Casting to Bluefish, Speckled Trout and Spanish Mackeral can be fun and productive this time of year, with the occasional Cobia, King Mackeral and False Albacore being taken.
Look for both Red Drum and Black Drum to periodically run by the pier. Puppy Drum and Big Channel Bass both can make a showing and be caught by fishing the bottom with fresh cut bait. Spot work well for this.
Some Striped Bass will also be caught, but in what number or size we never know.
